July 2012: In late July 2012, the Free Syrian Army (FSA) took over the town of Abu Kamal.
June 2014: Abu Kamal was captured by ISIL forces between late-June and early-July 2014.
November 2017: On 9 November 2017, ISIL retreated from the Abu Kamal.
November 2017: The Syrian Army and its allies retook complete control of the city of Abu Kamal.
November 2017: Abu Kamal was recaptured by ISIL.
