1. First Revolt of the Gwanseo Peasant War (1811-1812)


Was the first revolt by peasants and followers of the Donghak religion.

  • April 1894: The rebels occupied Taein.
  • April 1894: Buan conquered by Donghak Rebels.
  • April 1894: Donghak Rebels occupied Jeonju.
  • March 1894: The 4,000 rebels of Mujang turned towards Mount Baek, Gobu.
  • January 1894: A thousand rebels gathered in an abandoned horse ranch. Splitting into two armies, they destroyed three of the four gates of Gobu and occupied the government office.

  • 2. Second Revolt of the Gwanseo Peasant War (1811-1812)


    Was the second revolt by peasants and followers of the Donghak religion.

  • April 1895: After a number of battles, the rebel army was decisively defeated in the Battle of Ugeumchi, and the rebels were again defeated in the Battle of Taein. Hostility continued deep into the spring of 1895. The rebel leaders were captured in various locations in the Honam Region, and most were executed by a mass hanging in March.
