  • September 1796: French naval commander Joseph de Richery, captured British prisoners in Bay Bulls, Newfoundland, and then left for Saint Pierre and Miquelon.
  • August 1796: French forces led by Admiral Richery and Spanish forces landed in Bay Bulls and Portugal Cove in Conception Bay. They then advanced towards St. John's, the capital of Newfoundland, in an attempt to capture the strategic British-controlled territory.
