Chronology

Interactive Chronologies with maps are available in the section Changes Navigation

  • November 1975: After the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974 and the overthrow of the corporatist and authoritarian Estado Novo regime in Portugal, the new Portuguese government offered a ceasefire. On November 11, 1975, the last Portuguese troops left Angola unilaterally. The war of independence then turned into a bloody civil war.
  • February 1961: February 4, 1961 - November 11, 1975: The conflict dragged on wearily for several years, particularly in the eastern and northern regions of Angola. The separatists managed to establish a certain control over some peripheral areas of the country, but they always suffered from the effective counter-insurgency operations of the Portuguese security forces which, however, never managed to completely eradicate the guerrillas.
