August 1914: The construction of the Panama canal was completed in 1914, 401 years after Panama was first crossed by Vasco Núñez de Balboa. The United States spent almost $500 million ($12.8 billion in 2019) to finish the project. This was the largest American engineering project to date. The canal was formally opened on August 15, 1914, with the passage of the cargo ship SS Ancon.
January 1904: The Panama Canal Zone (Spanish: Zona del Canal de Panamá) was an unincorporated territory of the United States from 1903 to 1979, centered on the Panama Canal and surrounded by the Republic of Panama.
January 1980: In 1979, the Panama Canal Zone, which had been under US control since 1903, was officially handed over to the Republic of Panama. This transfer was negotiated by US President Jimmy Carter and Panamanian leader Omar Torrijos.
