January 701: The first historical sources tend to show that the kingdom of Kanem began forming around 700 AD under the nomadic Tebu-speaking Kanembu.

January 1201: The Daju kingdom was a medieval monarchy that existed in Darfur from possibly the 12th-15th century.
January 1381: Foundation of the Bornu Empire.
January 1451: The Kotoko kingdom was an African monarchy in what is today northern Cameroon and Nigeria, and southwestern Chad.
January 1460: The Mandara Kingdom was an African kingdom in the Mandara Mountains of what is today Cameroon. Tradition states that Mandara was founded shortly before 1500 by a female ruler named Soukda and a non-Mandarawa hunter named Gaya. The kingdom was first referred to by Fra Mauro (in 1459) and Leo Africanus (in 1526).

January 1793: In 1792, the Maroua lamidat was founded by the Fulani warrior Modibbo Adama. The lamidat is a traditional kingdom in the Far North Region of Cameroon, with Maroua as its capital. The establishment of the lamidat marked the beginning of Fulani influence in the region.
January 1801: Kotoko was completely subsumed into the Bornu Empire.
