January 701: The first historical sources tend to show that the kingdom of Kanem began forming around 700 AD under the nomadic Tebu-speaking Kanembu.

January 1201: The Daju kingdom was a medieval monarchy that existed in Darfur from possibly the 12th-15th century.

January 1381: Foundation of the Bornu Empire.

January 1451: The Kotoko kingdom was an African monarchy in what is today northern Cameroon and Nigeria, and southwestern Chad.

January 1460: The Mandara Kingdom was an African kingdom in the Mandara Mountains of what is today Cameroon. Tradition states that Mandara was founded shortly before 1500 by a female ruler named Soukda and a non-Mandarawa hunter named Gaya. The kingdom was first referred to by Fra Mauro (in 1459) and Leo Africanus (in 1526).

January 1481: In 1480, the territory of Baghirmi was founded by the Mbang Abd ar-Rahman. The region was known for its strong centralized government and trade networks, making it an important player in the Central African region.

January 1501: In the 15th century, Makari became a sultanate.

January 1771: Bibemi founded.

January 1793: In 1792, the Maroua lamidat was founded by the Fulani warrior Modibbo Adama. The lamidat is a traditional kingdom in the Far North Region of Cameroon, with Maroua as its capital. The establishment of the lamidat marked the beginning of Fulani influence in the region.

January 1801: Kotoko was completely subsumed into the Bornu Empire.

February 1804: The Sokoto Caliphate was a sovereign Sunni Muslim caliphate in West Africa that was founded during the jihad of the Fulani War in 1804 by Usman dan Fodio.

November 1882: French authorities formally established the French Congo on 30 November 1882.

January 1891: The central part of actual niger was conquered by the French in 1890.

April 1900: Battle of Kousséri: the Bornu Empire is defeated and integrated into the French colonial empire.

April 1900: The Bornu Empire was defeated and occupied by France after the Battle of Kousséri. In accordance with the borders decided at the Berlin Conference, part of the Bornu Empire was allotted to Great Britain.
