January 1746: During the leadership of Ngwane III Swazis settled in present-day Swaziland. These Swazis first settled north of the Pongola River.

January 1781: The Ngwane Kingdom was established during the rule of Ngwane III from around 1745 until 1780.
January 1853: Invasion of Swaziland in 1852.
January 1854: The British pressured the Zulu into withdrawing from Swaziland.
January 1887: From around 1876, a group of Boers lived on land bought from the Swazi king Mbandzeni. In 1886, a formal government was formed, following the adoption of a constitution. King Mbandzeni sold the land but kept his kingdom.
March 1906: After the Second Boer War, Eswatini became a British colony under the name of Swaziland.
September 1968: Independence is granted to the Protectorate of Swaziland.
April 2018: On 19 April 2018, King Mswati III announced that the Kingdom of Swaziland had renamed itself the Kingdom of Eswatini to mark the 50th anniversary of Swazi independence. The new name, Eswatini, means "land of the Swazis" in the Swazi language.
