Was a Mesopotamian city-state in actual Iraq. It was the nucleus of the later Assyrian Empire.

  • January 2449 BC: Rise of Assur to the status of city-state. The earliest known King of the Assyrian Early Period according to the Assyrian King List was Tudiya who ruled from about 2450 BC.

    1. Conquest of Sumer by Sargon of Akkad


    The military campaign of Sargon of Akkad resulted in the conquest of most of the Sumerian polities. Sargon's state is sometimes identified as the first empire in recorded history.
