Was the republican government of France from 27 October 1946 to 4 October 1958, governed by the fourth republican constitution.

Summary

The French Fourth Republic was the republican system of government in France between 1946 and 1958, established after the liberation of France at the end of World War II.

The Fourth Republic was characterized by a weak executive, with power divided between the president and the prime minister and parliament. This led to political instability, with 20 different governments in just 12 years. Key events included the war in Indochina, the Algerian War of Independence, and economic challenges.

The Fourth Republic came to an end in 1958 during the Algerian crisis. The French military in Algeria rebelled against the government's handling of the conflict, threatening a coup. This prompted the return of Charles de Gaulle to power, who was asked to form a new government.

De Gaulle subsequently led the creation of the French Fifth Republic, with a strengthened presidency. This marked a major shift in the French political system, moving away from the parliamentary model of the Fourth Republic.
