January 1838: The short-lived kingdom of Nxaba, plagued by internal dissension, collapsed in 1837 under the attacks of Soshangane.
January 1852: The South African Republic came into existence on 17 January 1852, when the British signed the Sand River Convention treaty with about 40,000 Boer people, recognising their independence in the region to the north of the Vaal River.
September 1890: Instructed by Rhodes to hurry east, Selous met with the Manica chief, Mtassa, on 14 September 1890, and agreed with him a concession whereby Mtassa promised not to ally with any other foreign power, and granted the Company exclusive rights to mine within his territory.
November 1895: In 1884-1885, European powers divided Africa into "spheres of influence" at the Berlin conference. In this "division of Africa", the lands which correspond to the current Mozambique belong to the Portuguese, who attack the kingdom of Gaza in order to consolidate their "effective occupation". Gungunhana fiercely resists but is ultimately defeated. The kingdom disappeared in 1895 after the Battle of Coolela, won by the Portuguese who thus ensured their hegemony over all of Mozambique.
