Was one of the many free medieval communes (practically city-states) of Italy. It was located in Lombardy.

Establishment


  • January 1099: Donation in 1098 of Insula Fulcheria (corresponding today to the Crema area) to the city of Cremona which with this deed became a free municipality, becoming one of the richest, most powerful and most populous cities in Northern Italy.

  • January 1108: Cremona acquired the possession of Tortona.

  • January 1123: Tortona declares itself Free Commune.

  • January 1161: In 1160 Cremona reconquered Crema.

  • January 1186: With the peace of Constance (1185) came the permission to rebuild the city of Crema as a castrum. A phase of free commune followed.

  • November 1322: With the end of the lordship of Giacomo Cavalcabò, Cremona fell under the influence of Milan.

  • January 1404: Cremona was reestablished as an independent lordship by the Cavalcabò family.

  • Disestablishment


  • January 1407: In 1406 the lordship passed to Filippo Maria Visconti, who made it hereditary. Cremona with this deed entered the Duchy of Milan and followed its fortunes until the unification of Italy.
