Describes the possessions of the House of Plantagenet during the 12th and 13th centuries, when they ruled over an area covering roughly half of France, all of England, and parts of Ireland and Wales, and had further influence over much of the remaining British Isles. It was a composite monarchy.

  • January 1145: Geoffrey V of Anjou was duke of Normandy by conquest from 1144.
  • January 1145: We presume that the Angevine Kingdom begins to be really powerful with the acquisition of Normandy as so the Angevins were powerful enough to make war with the french king.

    1. The Anarchy


    Was a civil war in England and Normandy between 1138 and 1153 that followed the death of King Henry I.

  • December 1154: After the death of Stephen of England, he is succeeded by Henry of Anjou. The Treaty of Wallingford had allowed Stephen to keep the crown until his death, but at the same time had forced him to recognize Henry of Anjou (also known as Henry FitzEmpress), son of Matilde, as his successor.

  • April 1152: Eleanor of Aquitaine married Henry who thus acquired control of the Duchy of Aquitaine.
