Was a medieval Signoria in Italy. It was located in Emilia-Romagna.
Establishment
January 1209: From 1208, with Azzo VI d'Este, the lordship of the House of Este was established in Ferrara.
January 1209: Azzo d'Este, after having defeated Salinguerra Torelli and Ezzelino II da Romano, becomes marquess of Ferrara and Verona. His charge is ratified by the Holy Roman Emperor Otto IV.

January 1211: At the behest of Pope Innocent III, Pesaro passed under the control of the Este family.
January 1217: From 1216 Pesaro reverted to an independent domain.
January 1251: Expansion Ferrara in neighboring territory under the Este family.
January 1263: Mastino I della Scala is elected Lord of Verona.
January 1289: Ferrara conquers Modena and Reggio Emilia.
January 1300: The territory of Porto Viro was divided between the Republic of Venice and the Este family of Ferrara.
January 1300: Comacchio entered the territories controlled by the Este starting from 1299.
January 1305: Foundation of the County of Rolo.
January 1307: The people of Reggio, aided by Gilberto da Correggio, lord of Parma, expelled the Estense family, restoring the citizens' freedoms (1306).
January 1396: Rovigo was under the joint rule of Venice and Ferrara between 1395 and 1438. This period marked a time of shared governance between the two powerful city-states in northern Italy.
January 1401: Ferrara conquers Adria.
August 1403: Reggio Emilia is conquered by Ferrara.
June 1404: In May 1404, Ottobuono reconquered and brought Reggio back under the insignia of Giovanni Maria Visconti, from whom it had been taken by the Este family.
January 1410: During June Niccolò III d'Este, Marquis of Ferrara, took possession of the lands of Parma and Reggio with his army, managing to keep them until the times following the killing, in 1412, of Giovanni Maria Visconti and the succession to power in the Duchy of Milan of his brother, Filippo Maria.
January 1430: The cities of Garfagnana made an act of dedication to the Este family in 1429.
January 1439: Rovigo was under dual Venetian-Ferrara administration until 1438.
January 1453: Borso d'Este receives the title of Duke of Modena-Reggio from the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III.
Disestablishment
January 1472: Borso d'Este receives also the title of Duke of Ferrara from pope Paul II.
