Is a Polynesian country and archipelago. The country has 171 islands. In the 10th century, the Tu'i Tonga Empire was established in the island of Tonga. In 1900 the Kingdom became a British protectorate and was added to the British Western Pacific Territories. It was a separate protectorate from 1953, until it re-emerged as an independent country in 1970.

  • January 941: From 940 Samoa was ruled by Tonga.

  • January 1201: The Kingdom of Tonga reached its peak during the period 1200-1500.

  • January 1251: Independence of the Paramountcy of Samoa from Tonga.

  • January 1451: The kingdom of ʻUvea was founded sometimes in the 15th century and the monarch was titled Tuʻi ʻUvea.

  • January 1566: Tu`a (Alo) kingdom founded.

  • January 1601: By 1600 AD the Kingdom of Tonga was reduced only to the Island of Tonga.

  • May 1900: Tonga became a protected state under a Treaty of Friendship with Britain.

  • June 1970: The Treaty of Friendship and Tonga's protection status ended in 1970.
