  • January 1149 BC: Magadha was an ancient Indian kingdom in southern Bihar, and was counted as one of the sixteen Mahajanapadas, 'Great Countries' of ancient India. Magadha played an important role in the development of Jainism and Buddhism, and two of India's greatest empires, the Maurya Empire and Gupta Empire, originated in Magadha.

  • January 321 BC: The last Nanda king was overthrown by Chandragupta Maurya, the founder of the Maurya Empire, and the latter's mentor Chanakya.

  • January 543 BC: The Haryanka dynasty, believed to be the second ruling dynasty of Magadha, succeeded the mythological Barhadratha dynasty in -544.

  • January 491 BC: The ruler of Magadha, Bimbisara of the Haryanka dynasty, greatly expanded the Kingdom during his reign from 544 BC to 492 BC.

  • January 449 BC: The Kosala kingdom was defeated by Ajatashatru (5th or early 4th cent. BC) of the Magadhan Haryanka dynasty, and absorbed into the Magadha kingdom, which formed the basis of the Mauryan empire.
