The Marquisate of Bodonitsa was originally created as a vassal state of the Kingdom of Thessalonica after the Fourth Crusade. It became a direct vassal of the Latin Empire in 1210. However, after the Latin Empire was conquered by the Byzantines, it became practically independent.

    1. Re-establishment of the Byzantine Empire


    The recapture of the city of Constantinople by the forces of the Empire of Nicaea, led to the re-establishment of the Byzantine Empire under the Palaiologos dynasty, after an interval of 57 years where the city had been the capital of the Latin Empire installed by the Fourth Crusade in 1204.
