Is a country in West Africa, bordering Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Mali, Cote D'Ivoire, Sierra Leone and Liberia. It gained independency from France in 1958.

Establishment


  • October 1958: French Guinea became independent from France in 1958 after its voters rejected Charles de Gaulle's Constitution of 1958. This led to the territory joining the Republic of Guinea.

  • January 1980: Guinea aligned itself with the Soviet Union and adopted socialist policies.

  • April 1984: On April 3, 1984, a military junta led by Lansana Conté and Diarra Traoré took power in Guinea without bloodshed. Conté was declared President and Traoré Prime Minister. Conté condemned his predecessor's human rights abuses, released 250 political prisoners and persuaded some 200,000 people to return to Guinea. He turned away from socialism, but without taking any steps towards democracy.
