Macedonia, a landlocked country in Southeast Europe, emerged from the dissolution of Yugoslavia. It became independent after a referendum in 1991. Due to a dispute with Greece, in February 2019 the country renamed iteslf "Republic of North Macedonia".

Establishment

September 1991: An independence referendum was held in then Socialist Republic of Macedonia.

1. Events

February 2019: In June 2018, Macedonia and Greece resolved the dispute over Macedonia's name with an agreement that the country should rename itself "Republic of North Macedonia". This renaming came into effect in February 2019.
