Was one of the many free medieval communes (practically city-states) of Italy. It was located in Lombardy.

Establishment

January 1001: Around 1000, the area of Ticino ended up in the hands of the Milanese.

1. War of Milan against Como (10-Year War)

Was a conflict over the control of Insubria, Brianza and Valtellina in the early 12th century, fought between the comuni of Milan and Como.

August 1127: Ten-Year War: Annexation of Como, Lugano and part of Valtellina to the Commune of Milan.

2. Further events (Unrelated to Any War)

January 1051: Around 1050 Milano declares itself Free Commune.

January 1101: Establishment of Milan as an independent Commune (city-state)..

January 1158: The city of Vigevano is conquered by the Milanese in 1157.

January 1159: Vifevano returns under the control of Pavia.

January 1163: Como was rebuilt starting from 1158 and only recovered its independence under Federico I, known as Barbarossa, participating in the emperor's Italian military campaign which culminated in 1162 with the siege and destruction of the Lombard capital.

January 1250: The control over Lucarno and Lugano passed to Como.

January 1251: Milan conquers Alessandria.

June 1259: Martino della Torre is elected firs Signore (Lord) of Milan.
