Was a signoria, and then a duchy, centered in Milan, modern-day Lombardy. It was one of the largest Italian states of the middle ages, controlling vast regions of northwestern Italy and for short periods of time also territories in Tuscany, Umbria and Piedmont. From the late 15th century, the Duchy of Milan was contested between the forces of the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of France, and despites nominally existing until 1796, it ceased to exist as an independent state in 1535.

June 1259: Martino della Torre is elected firs Signore (Lord) of Milan.

Expansion during the rule of Azzone Visconti in the Signoria of Milan.
January 1333: On 27 September 1332, the Milanese Azzone Visconti with the support of the soldiers of the Gonzagas and Mastino II della Scala, defeats the garrison of King John after a bloody battle and takes possession of Bergamo.
January 1333: Domain of Milan over Pavia 1332-1336.
January 1335: Milan conquers Vercelli and Cremona.
January 1336: In 1335 Gravedona, like the whole of the Como area, became part of the Visconti Lordship.

January 1340: Pontremoli was annexed by the Visconti of Milan.
January 1341: With Azzone Visconti Como definitively entered the Visconti orbit.
August 1342: The County of Asti was established on August 14 1342 for the free adhesion of the citizens of Asti to the dominion of the Viscontiof Milan.
January 1343: Milanese troops occupy Locarno.
January 1346: Alessandria fells under the rule of Milan.
January 1347: Milan conquers Parma.
January 1348: Mondovi becomes part of the Visconti Domains.
January 1348: Milano conquers Bologna.

January 1350: Milan conquers Cherasco.
January 1351: The Orellis controlled Biasca until the middle of the 14th century, when it came under Visconti dominion together with the Blenio valley.
