The Sokoto Caliphate was a sovereign Sunni Muslim caliphate in West Africa that was founded during the jihad of the Fulani War in 1804 by Usman dan Fodio. In 1903 it was conquered and partitioned by the Great Britain and the German Empire.

Was an Islamic jihad and military expedition of Usman Dan Fodiyo, ruler of the Sokoto Caliphate, against the Hausa Kingdoms of preswnt-day Nigeria and Cameroon.
January 1806: In 1805, the forces of dan Fodio, the jihadists, captured the Hausa kingdom of Kebbi.
January 1808: By 1807, the jihadists had taken over the states of Katsina and Daura, and the important kingdom of Kano.
January 1809: In 1808, the jihadists of the Sokoto Caliphate captured Gobir.

January 1902: The British occupied the city of Sokoto.
February 1902: In January 1902, German colonial officer Hans Dominik defeated the remaining troops of Sokoto Emir Djubayru in the battle of Miskin-Maroua, which brought most of the Adamaua region under German rule.
March 1903: At the grand market square of Sokoto, the last Vizier of the Sokoto Caliphate officially surrendered to British forces. The Caliphate was partitioned between great Britain, France and Germany in accordance with the borders decided at the Berlin Conference.
January 1805: In 1804 British protection was promised to the Maratha subedar, Rao Shiv Rao Hari Bhau resulting in his de facto independence of the Peshwas of Pune. He assumed the title of Rao of Jhansi in the year 1804. He became the first Rao of Jhansi, the area of which extended over 4,059 km2.
January 1805: Lafia Beri-Beri state founded.
January 1805: Gombe, a Fulbe jihad state, founded.
January 1806: In 1805, during the Fulani War, Daura was taken over by Fulani warrior Malam Ishaku, who set up an emirate.

January 1809: The last Emir of Adamawa, Modibo Adama, was overthrown by the Fulbe Jihad led by Usman dan Fodio in 1808. Following his defeat, Modibo Adama moved and took over Bibemi, which was then incorporated into the Sokoto Caliphate.

January 1896: Gruner and his companion Ernst von Carnap-Quernheimb concluded supposed "protection treaties" with heads of the kingdoms Gando (Nupe and Ilorin) and Gurma (Matschakuale and Pama).
January 1899: Pategi state, an offshoot of Nupe, is founded. It was part of British Northern Nigeria Protectorate.
