  • August 1849: The then-President, former Lieutenant General and Supreme Commander of the Presidential Guards under President Riché, Faustin Soulouque, inspired by Napoleon, declared himself Emperor Faustin I on August 26, 1849 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Port-au-Prince.

  • July 1858: Haiti protested the annexation, but on July 7, 1858, U.S. President James Buchanan issued an Executive Order upholding the American claim, which also called for military action to enforce it. Navassa Island has since been maintained by the United States as an unincorporated .
