  • January 1201: In 1200, the kingdoms of Diarra, Sosso, and Mali in West Africa acquired their independence. The Sosso Empire, led by King Soumaoro Kante, was a powerful state that controlled the region before being conquered by the Mali Empire under Sundiata Keita.
