Was a sultanate that ruled the Sulu Archipelago. Initially a vassal of Brunei, the Sultanate gained its independency in 1578.
Establishment
January 1579: Sulu became vassal of Brunei.

Was a civil war fought in the Bruneian Empire from 1660 to 1673.
January 1674: Eastern part of Sabah given to Sulu Sultanate as the reward for assisting the Muhyiddin's Forces.
January 1705: In 1704 the Sultan of Brunei ceded the lands East of Marudu Bay to the Sultan of Sulu.
January 1706: The Sultanate of Sulu totally gave up its rule over Palawan to Spain in 1705 and Basilan to Spain in 1762.
January 1732: The Bulungan Sultanate was founded by the Uma Apan, a Kayan group from the Apo Kayan region. They settled near the coast in the 17th century, establishing their rule in actual North Kalimantan in 1731.
April 1851: In 1848 and 1851, the Spanish launched attacks on Balanguingui and Jolo respectively. A peace treaty was signed on 30 April 1851 in which the sultan could only regain its capital if Sulu and its dependencies became a part of the Philippine Islands under the sovereignty of Spain.
