The Tulunids were the first independent dynasty to rule Egypt, as well as much of Syria, since the Ptolemaic dynasty. They remained independent from 868, when they broke away from the central authority of the Abbasid dynasty.

  • January 898: An imam of the Shi'ite Zaydiyyah sect, al-Hadi ila'l-Haqq Yahya, established a power base in the northern highlands in 897. It was the beginning of the Yemeni imamate.
