Establishment
January 1137: The first official act of the municipality of Reggio Emilia that has come down to us dates back to 1136.

1. Events
January 1201: Based on available maps, in 1200 the comune federale frignanese was annexed by the Reggio Emilia Commune. This marked a significant shift in power dynamics in the region, as the Reggio Emilia Commune was a prominent city-state in northern Italy during the Middle Ages.
January 1201: Expansion of the Reggio Emilia Commune (based on maps).
January 1281: The city of Suzzara was conquered by the Gonzaga family of Mantua.
January 1289: Ferrara conquers Modena and Reggio Emilia.
January 1307: The people of Reggio, aided by Gilberto da Correggio, lord of Parma, expelled the Estense family, restoring the citizens' freedoms (1306).
Disestablishment
January 1327: In 1326 Cardinal Bertrando del Poggetto occupied the city of Reggio Emilia in the name of Pope John XXII.
