Is a Western Asian country located in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Levant. Syria became independent from France in 1946. The current Arab Republic of Syria emerged in 1961, after the end of the United Arab States (an union of Egypt and Syria). Since the start of the Syrian Civil War in 2011, the Government has limited control over the country.
