Was an early modern Indian confederation that rose to dominate much of the Indian subcontinent in the 18th century. They are largely credited for ending Mughal control over the Indian subcontinent. Maratha rule officially ended in 1818 with the defeat of Peshwa Bajirao II at the hands of the British East India Company in Third Anglo-Maratha War.
