Byzantine Malta remained almost uninhabited until it was resettled in aroundĀ 1048 orĀ 1049 by a Muslim community and their slaves, who rebuilt the city of Melite as Medina. In 1127 the Normans, that had conquered Sicily, took possession also of Malta.
