Is a country in Western Asia. The area was contended between Persia and the Ottoman Empire for centuries until becoming definitively part of the latter. During World War I, Iraq was seized by the British, that subsequentyl organized it in a Mandate. It gained its independency in 1932 as the Kingdom of Iraq and became a Republic in 1958. It changed its official denomination to Republic of Iraq in 1992.
