Is a country in Central Europe. The country is bordered by Lithuania and Russia to the northeast, Belarus and Ukraine to the east, Slovakia and the Czech Republic to the south, and Germany to the west. A Polih nation exist since the establishment of the Duchy of Poland in 961. After a long period of union with nearby Lithuania (1386-1795), Poland was partitioned between Russia, Prussia and Austria. The country was again independent for a short period during the Napoleonic period (Duchy of Warsaw) before being annexed by Russia. It gained its independence after World War I. At the beginning of World War II it was occupied by Germany. The USSR liberated the country and established a Communist regime that lasted until 1989.
