1. Battles in Urum al-Sughrah


Were a series of battles in and around Urum al-Sughrah, in the Aleppo Governatorate, during the Syrian Civil War.

  • March 2017: Urum al-Sughrah partially occupied by Syrian government forces.
  • July 2012: Since June 2012, FSA in control of Urum al-Sughrah.
  • March 2017: Urum al-Sughrah occupied by Syrian government forces.
  • March 2017: Urum al-Sughrah occupied by Syrian Opposition.

  • 2. Government Reconquest of Aleppo


    Was a military offensive by the Syrian government against rebel forces in Aleppo, during the Syrian Civil War.

  • March 2017: Dayr Hafir retaken by Syrian Government forces during the East Aleppo offensive.
  • September 2016: In the last days of September, government troops reconquered important positions, held by the rebels for three years, including the Handarat camp and the former al-Kindi hospital, and in the old city.
  • December 2016: In a new offensive between December 2 and 4, the Syrian army advanced deep west of the international airport of Aleppo, recapturing various districts and coming within about 1km of friendly lines at the Citadel.
  • August 2016: On 6 August, the rebel militia managed to conquer some government strongholds, thus reopening a narrow corridor towards the eastern part of Aleppo.
  • November 2016: The Syrian army reconquered important districts, including those of Hanano, Jabal Badro and al-Sakhu. On November 28, the northern part of eastern Aleppo (about a third of the territory controlled by the rebels) was completely reconquered by the regular army.
  • July 2012: The battle for Aleppo began on 19 July 2012.
  • September 2016: On 4 September, the Syrian army and its allies recaptured the village of Qarassi and the important military base of Ramousah, which they had lost in early August.
  • November 2016: On October 28, the rebels launched a new and massive offensive west of Aleppo.
  • December 2016: On the evening of 22 December, following the departure of the last convoy of rebels and family members, the total reconquest of the city of Aleppo was announced by the Syrian armed forces.
  • November 2016: Part of the territory lost to the rebels, adjacent to the Kurdish neighborhood of Sheikh Maqsoud, was occupied by the Kurdish People's Defense Units (YPG).
  • July 2016: The government troops advancing from the north and south finally managed on July 27 to rejoin west of the Kurdish district of Sheikh Maqsoud, isolating and besieging the eastern part of Aleppo.
  • December 2016: The army retook the districts of Bustan Al-Qasr and Sheikh Saeed, considered among the major strongholds of the opposition.
  • November 2016: The Syrian government completes the reconquest of all the lost areas in Aleppo within the first days of November.

  • 3. Rebel conquest of Aleppo


    Was the conquest of the city of Aleppo by rebel forces in the early phase of the Syrian Civil War.

  • August 2012: The Aleppo neighborhood of Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn is conquered by the Syrian Army.
  • July 2012: On July 19, 2012, rebels attacked Aleppo from the villages around the city in the Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn district, to the south-west and in the Haydariyya and Sakhur districts, to the north-east.

    Were a series of battles in and around Jarabulus, in the Aleppo Governatorate, during the Syrian Civil War.

  • July 2013: Jarabulus falls to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
  • July 2012: The Syrian opposition took over Jarabulus along with its border post with Turkey.
  • January 2014: By January 2014, rebels mainly from the al-Tawhid Brigade engaged in clashes with ISIL and seized the town of Jarabulus.
  • January 2014: ISIL was able to recapture Jarabulus.

  • 7. Battles in Manbij


    Were a series of battles in and around Manbij, in the Aleppo Governatorate, during the Syrian Civil War.

  • February 2014: In January 2014, forces from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) took over Manbij after ousting the rebels.
  • October 2019: During the 2019 Turkish offensive into north-eastern Syria, following the withdraw of US and other Western troops from northern Syria, the Syrian Arab Army and Russian Military Police entered Manbij to preempt a Turkish and TFree Syrian Army (FSA) offensive.
  • July 2012: Manbij fell to local rebel forces who thereafter administered the city.

  • 8. Kurdish Conquest of the Afrin District


    Was the conquest of the Afrin district by Kurdish rebel forces in the early phase of the Syrian Civil War.

  • July 2012: Syrian government forces withdrew from Afrin in the summer of 2012. The Popular Protection Units (YPG) took control of the city soon afterward.

  • November 2013: By mid November, 2013, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant was in full control of Al-Bab.

    Were a series of battles in and around Atarib, in the Aleppo Governatorate, during the Syrian Civil War.

  • December 2013: By November 2013, the town of Atarib was controlled by ISIL.
  • August 2012: The Syrian army was forced out of Atarib in July 2012.
  • May 2014: By April 2014, the town of Atarib was back under rebel control.

  • 11. Battles in Tell Rifaat


    Were a series of battles in and around Tell Rifaat, in the Aleppo Governatorate, during the Syrian Civil War.

  • August 2012: In the early summer of 2012, Syrian government authorities withdrew from Tell Rifaat and were replaced by a council made up of local scholars, judges, and former Syrian Army officers.
  • November 2013: By November 2013, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant was in full control of the town Tell Rifaat.
  • February 2014: In January 2014, resistance fighters, mainly members of the Islamic Front, defeated ISIS militants in Tell Rifaat.
  • February 2016: Tell Rifaat was taken by the Kurdish People's Defense Units (YPG)-led Syrian Democratic Forces.
  • March 2018: Tell Rifaat came under control of the Syrian army.

  • 21. YPG Counterattack

  • March 2015: Between 1 and 6 March the Kurdish People's Defense Units (YPG) and Free Syrian Army (FSA), supported by airstrikes, besieged ISIL militants at the French-owned Lafarge Cement Plant and seized 11 villages, including Shuyukh Tahtani and Shuyukh Fawqani, the last two villages in the western part of Kobanî Canton still held by ISIL.

  • February 2017: On 25 February, ISIL began to retreat from the town of Tadef, with the Syrian Army capturing the town on the following day.
  • February 2017: Al-Bab was captured from ISIL by Turkish-backed rebels on 23 February, along with the towns of Qabasin and Bizaah.
  • September 2016: Turkey deployed tanks to the Syrian town of al-Rai.
  • September 2016: Turkey declared that the Turkish-backed rebels had captured the last remaining ISIL held villages along the Turkish border.
