  • January 585: After the Romans left the province of Britannia, the Picts advanced south. In 550, Bridei mac Maelcon was crowned 'King of the Picts', who is said to have played an important role in the unrecorded conversion of the Picts to Christianity during the 6th century. Bridei was a dynamic leader. He united northern and southern Picts and managed to defeat the Scots.

  • January 844: Through the merger of Gaelic and Pictish kingdoms, Cínaed mac Ailpín (Kenneth MacAlpin) established the Kingdom of Scotland in the 840s (traditionally dated to 843).

  • January 665: The first mention of Fortriú in the Annals of Ulster is from the year 664.

  • January 742: Dál Riata was subject to the Pictish king Óengus mac Fergusa during his reign, and though it had its own kings beginning in the 760s, does not appear to have recovered its political independence from the Picts. In the 730s the Pictish king Óengus I led campaigns against Dál Riata and brought it under Pictish overlordship by 741.
