November 1640: A revolution organized by the nobility and bourgeoisie on 1 December 1640, sixty years after the crowning of Philip I (Philip II of Spain), the first "dual monarch", ended the Iberian Union between Portugal and Spain.
Was a global conflict that lasted from 1939 to 1945 (it started sooner in certain regions) between the Axis Powers (mainly Germany, Japan and Italy) and the Allies (mainly the Soviet Union, the U.S.A., the U.K., China and France). It was the war with more fatalities in history. The war in Asia began when Japan invaded China on July 7, 1937. The war in Europe began when Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. The war ended with the complete defeat of the Axis powers, which were occupied by the Allies.

July 1940: With the creation of Vichy France, initially all French colonies were aligned with Vichy.
July 1940: Governor Henri Sautot rallies the French administration of the New Hebrides to Free France.
January 1801: The Hebrides were colonised by both the British and French in the 18th century, shortly after Captain James Cook visited.
October 1887: For the protection of the French and British citizens in New Hebrides, a joint naval commission was established under the Convention of 16 October 1887.
August 1889: In 1889, the Anglo-French Joint Naval Commission awarded the territory to the Independent Commune of Franceville. Franceville was founded by French explorer Savorgnan de Brazza and was declared an independent commune by French naval officer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza.
July 1890: In 1889, French naval officer Victor Girard established the Independent Commune of Franceville in present-day Gabon. The commune was intended to be a utopian society, but it was short-lived. By June 1890, the commune had been dismantled by the Anglo-French Joint Naval Commission.
October 1906: France and Great Britain signed an agreement making Vanuatu an Anglo-French condominium.
January 1907: France and Great Britain signed additional agreements splitting the New Hebrides into two separate communities: one Anglophone and one Francophone.
July 1980: The condominium lasted from 1906 until 1980, when New Hebrides gained its independence as the Republic of Vanuatu.
