Is an island group in the South Pacific Ocean that is now Vanuatu. The islands were colonised by both the British and French in the 18th century, shortly after Captain James Cook visited them.

1. Events

  • October 1887: For the protection of the French and British citizens in New Hebrides, a joint naval commission was established under the Convention of 16 October 1887.
  • October 1906: France and Great Britain signed an agreement making Vanuatu an Anglo-French condominium.

Disestablishment

  • January 1907: France and Great Britain signed additional agreements splitting the New Hebrides into two separate communities: one Anglophone and one Francophone.
