Is a country in Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the exclave of Oecusse on the island's north-western half, and the minor islands of Atauro and Jaco. It unilaterally declared independece from Portugal in 1975 but was invaded by Indonesia shortly after. Indonesia left East Timor in 1999 and the country gained full independence in 2002 after a UN-administered transition period.

Establishment

May 2002: Control of East Timor passed to local authorities, which proclaimed the independence of the country.

The 1999 East Timorese crisis began with attacks by pro-Indonesia militia groups on civilians, and expanded to general violence throughout the country, centred in the capital Dili.
