Was a Gaelic kingdom that encompassed the western seaboard of Scotland and north-eastern Ireland, on each side of the North Channel.
Establishment
January 561: The story of Dál Riata moved from foundation myth to something nearer to history with the reports of the death of Comgall mac Domangairt around 540 and of his brother Gabrán around 560.

January 583: After Báetán's death in 581, his rival Áedán mac Gabráin, king of Dál Riata, is said to have taken the island in 582.
January 609: The kingdom reached its peak under Áedán mac Gabráin (574-608). During his reign the power and influence of Dál Riata grew. He led an expedition to Orkney and the Isle of Man, and attacked the British kingdom of Strathclyde.
January 643: During the reign of Domnall Brecc, Dál Riata, a Gaelic kingdom in Scotland and Ireland, suffered serious defeats in 642. The territory of Ailech in Ireland was lost during this time, marking the end of Dál Riata's "golden age."

Disestablishment
January 742: Dál Riata was subject to the Pictish king Óengus mac Fergusa during his reign, and though it had its own kings beginning in the 760s, does not appear to have recovered its political independence from the Picts. In the 730s the Pictish king Óengus I led campaigns against Dál Riata and brought it under Pictish overlordship by 741.
