Was one of the private colonies of the American Colonization Society (ACS) founded in Liberia. The ACS was an organization that encouraged and supported the migration African-Americans to Africa. The colony joined Liberia in 1854.

Establishment

February 1834: New Maryland was first settled in 1834 by freed African-American slaves and freeborn African Americans primarily from the U.S. state of Maryland, under the auspices of the Maryland State Colonization Society.
