January 1904: The Panama Canal Zone (Spanish: Zona del Canal de Panamá) was an unincorporated territory of the United States from 1903 to 1979, centered on the Panama Canal and surrounded by the Republic of Panama.

Disestablishment

January 1980: In 1979, the Panama Canal Zone, which had been under US control since 1903, was officially handed over to the Republic of Panama. This transfer was negotiated by US President Jimmy Carter and Panamanian leader Omar Torrijos.
