Summary
The earliest known inhabitants of the area that is now Sweden were hunter-gatherer tribes dating back thousands of years. By the Viking Age, Sweden was divided into petty kingdoms centered around areas like Lake Mälaren. The first historically documented king was Erik Segersäll, who ruled in the late 10th century.
Under the Stenkil dynasty, Sweden underwent Christianization and began to coalesce into a more unified kingdom.

1. Establishment of the Kingdom of Sweden
Eric the Victorious was a Swedish monarch as of around 970. Since he is the first Swedish king in a consecutive regnal succession, who is attested in sources independent of each other, Sweden's list of rulers usually begins with him.
2. Battle of Svolder
The Battle of Svolder was a naval battle fought in September 999 or 1000 in the western Baltic Sea between King Olaf Tryggvason of Norway and an alliance of his enemies. After the Battle of Svolder, the victorious leaders split Norway into areas of control.
