Was the first form of the Swedish Monarchy, emerged when Eric the Victorious united the different Germanic peoples of the region into one country.

Summary

The earliest known inhabitants of the area that is now Sweden were hunter-gatherer tribes dating back thousands of years. By the Viking Age, Sweden was divided into petty kingdoms centered around areas like Lake Mälaren. The first historically documented king was Erik Segersäll, who ruled in the late 10th century.

Under the Stenkil dynasty, Sweden underwent Christianization and began to coalesce into a more unified kingdom.

Establishment

  • January 971: The Kingdom of Sweden was probably established by Eric the Victorious, who was king from around 970. Since he is the first Swedish king in a consecutive regnal succession, who is attested in sources independent of each other, Sweden's list of rulers usually begins with him.
