Is a country in west-central Africa. It is bordered by Nigeria to the west and north; Chad to the northeast; the Central African Republic to the east; and Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and the Republic of the Congo to the south. In 1960, the French-administered part of Cameroon became independent, as the Republic of Cameroon. The southern part of British Cameroons federated with it in 1961 to form the Federal Republic of Cameroon. The country was renamed the United Republic of Cameroon in 1972 but reverted its denomination to the Republic of Cameroon in 1984 with a presidential decree by president Paul Biya.

January 1960: French Cameroon became independent as the Republic of Cameroon in January 1960.

1. Events
October 1961: The southern part of British Cameroons joined it to form the Federal Republic of Cameroon.
January 1985: The United Republic of Cameroon is renamed Republic of Cameroon in 1984.
August 2008: Despites Southern Cameroons having voted in 1961 to leave Nigeria and became a part of Cameroon, the Bakassi Peninsula had remained under the administration of the Nigerian city of Calabar. The peninsula was completely ceded to Cameroon on 14 August 2008.
