Was an U.S. dependency in the Pacific. Initially part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands from 1947, it voted in a referendum against joining the Federated States of Micronesia in 1978 and thus remained under U.S. control until its independency in 1994.

January 1981: The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands became the Republic of Palau on 1 January 1981.
