Is a country controlling the southwestern part of the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen emerged from the union of North and South Yemen, on May 22, 1990.

Establishment


  • May 1990: With the collapse of communism, South Yemen was unified with the Yemen Arab Republic (commonly known as "North Yemen") on 22 May 1990 to form the present-day Yemen.
  • May 1990: It united with the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (commonly known as South Yemen), to form the current Republic of Yemen.

    1. Unification of Yemen


    In 1990 the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (also known as South Yemen) was united with the Yemen Arab Republic (also known as North Yemen), forming the Republic of Yemen.


    2. Hanish Islands conflict


    Was a conflict between Yemen and Eritrea over the disputed island of Greater Hanish in the Red Sea.

  • December 1995: Eritrean forces attacked the Yemeni contingent and overran the entire island within three days of combat.
  • November 1998: The Permanent Court of Arbitration determined that most of the Hanish Isands belonged to Yemen, while Eritrea was to retain the right to fish the waters around all the islands and sovereignty over some small islands close to Eritrea. Yemeni Defence Minister Mohammad Diefallah Mohammad raised his country's flag over the island of Greater Hanish as Yemeni army and navy troops took up positions on it. At the same time, Eritrean troops departed on board a helicopter and a naval vessel.

  • 3. Arab Spring


    Initially a series of anti-government protests and revolts across the Arab world, it soon evolved into a series of wars. The wars caused by the revolts are sometimes referred to as the Arab Winter.

    3.1.Yemeni Revolution

    Was a revolution in Yemen in 2011-2012, part of the Arab Spring, that resulted in the overthrow of Saleh government.

    3.1.Yemeni Civil War (2015-present)

    Is an ongoing civil war in Yemen between the government and the Houthis (an Islamist political and armed organization that emerged from Saada Governorate in North Yemen), as well as involving several local, in some case secessionist, forces.

  • February 2014: The Houthi seize control of 'Amran.
  • February 2014: In January 2014, the Yemeni government began evacuating Wahhabi residents from Saada Governorate, handing victory in the region to the Houthis.
  • September 2014: Houthi forces take control of Sana'a.
  • December 2014: Mokha under Houthi control since Nov. 2014.
  • March 2015: Battle of Aden Airport.
  • May 2015: Battle of Dhale.
  • July 2015: Pro-Hadi forces had retaken full control of Aden, and the Aden Airport was reopened.
  • December 2015: The loyalists captured the city of Haradh.
  • January 2016: Battle of Mualla.
  • January 2016: The loyalists captured Port Midi.
  • February 2016: Al-Qaeda captured Azzan.
  • April 2016: Al Houta, a town in the Lahij Governorate of Yemen, fell under the control of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in early 2016.
  • January 2017: Mulla is taken back by government forces.
  • December 2017: Troops loyal to Hadi completely captured the cities of Beihan and Usaylan.
  • January 2018: The STC seized control of Aden.
  • August 2019: The Southern Transitional Council took control of Aden and Zinjibar.
  • June 2020: The STC seized full control of Socotra.
  • September 2020: Houthi forces said that they managed to capture eleven of the twelve districts and 95% of the Al-Jawf province with only the eastern district of Khab and al-Shaaf still being in Saudi-led coalition control.

  • 3.1.1.Taiz campaign

    Is a battle of the Yemeni Civil War (2014 - present) for the control of the city of Taiz.

  • March 2015: Houthi forces backed by troops loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh, Yemen's influential former president and General People's Congress party head, swept into Taiz on 22 March, capturing the military airport and other key parts of the city.
  • August 2015: Pro-Hadi forces, backed by Saudi airstrikes, recaptured most of the city of Ta'izz.
  • April 2016: Houthi forces and allied forces loyal to former president Saleh seized control of the center of Al Wazi'iyah District in southwestern Taiz governorate on April 1.
  • June 2016: The Houthis captured the base of Brigade 35, Also known as "Al-Qasr Camp" after a week long battle.
  • September 2016: By August 2016 Houthis had captured the Hayfan district.
  • November 2016: Pro-government fighters were able to regain control of Al-Jehmaliah town.
  • January 2017: Pro-government forces completely liberated the Dhubab District.
  • February 2017: Emirates News Agency reported that Yemeni pro-government forces backed by Saudi coalition troops had secured Mocha.

  • 3.1.2.Abyan campaign

    Was a campaign for control of the Abyan Governorate of Yemen, between the Houthis and Yemen Army, during the Yemeni Civil War (2014 - present).

  • March 2015: The 15th Armored Brigade, based in Lawdar, announced their support to the Houthis.
  • March 2015: Houthi and allied army forces seized the city of Shuqrah.
  • March 2015: On 29 March, pro-Houthi troops captured Zinjibar.
  • August 2015: Pro-government forces retook Jaʿār and Lawdar.
  • August 2015: Pro-Hadi forces had retaken the provincial capital Zinjibar.
  • August 2015: Pro-Hadi forces had recaptured the entire Abyan Governorate.

  • 3.1.3.Shabwah campaign

    Was a military offensive by the Yemeni government in the Saada Governorate, during the Yemeni Civil War (2014 - present).

  • April 2015: Air-strikes hit the Houthi-held Muhra base, outside Ataq, after which the Houthis and their allies seized government and police installations in the city.
  • April 2015: Battle of Mukalla.
  • May 2015: At the end of May, the Houthis captured the city of Saeed.
  • August 2015: Pro-Hadi forces regained control of the entire Shabwah Governorate, including the city of Ataq, after Houthi forces and their allies withdrew from the region.

  • 3.1.4.Ma'rib Campaign

    Is an ongoing military campaign taking place in the Yemeni civil war for the control of the Marib Governorate of Yemen.

  • September 2015: In September 2015, Saudi-backed Yemeni forces loyal to the government of Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi engaged Houthi forces and successfully established control over the eastern and western regions of Marib province. They took territory in Sirwah and Hareeb including the Hailan mountain, Al Ateef, Al Makhdarah, and Al Masaryah hill.
  • June 2020: Houthi-led forces fought its way in the Baydha District.
  • June 2020: Houthi forces made further advances on the north of Badya and the south of Marib.
  • September 2020: Houthi forces made further advances in Marib Province closing into the Ma'rib city itself.
  • October 2021: On 17 October, Houthi forces took control of the Abdiya, and Harib districts in Marib Governorate.

  • 3.1.5.Nihm Offensive

    Was a battle in the Nihm District during the Yemeni Civil War (2014 - present).

  • December 2015: On 16 December, government forces took control of Fardhat Nihm from Saleh/Houthi forces. Clashes continued for approximately ten days until government forces took full control of Fardhat Nihm.
  • February 2016: Houthi forces were able to regain the town of Nihm.

  • 3.1.6.Abyan conflict (2016-2018)

    Was a series of clashes between forces of AQAP (Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula) loyal to Yemeni president Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, and forces loyal to the Southern Movement for the control of Abyan between 2016 and 2018.

  • January 2016: Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) captured the city of Zinjibar in December 2015.
  • May 2016: Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) agreed to withdraw from Zinjibar.
  • August 2016: Hadi loyalists, alongside Sudanese troops, and pro-Hadi tribal fighters, invaded Shaqrah, Zinjibar and Jaar, and recaptured them from AQAP, killing some 40 fighters.
  • August 2016: AQAP withdrew from most of Abyan after Hadi government and popular resistance forces drove them out of Lawder city and Ahwar district.
  • August 2016: AQAP's remaining fighters withdrew to Mahfad after tribal forces led by pro-Hadi tribal forces expelled them from Wadea.
  • August 2016: Hadi-allied forces entered al Mahfad district to clear AQAP militants from the town, resulting in the complete elimination of AQAP from strongholds in Abyan.
  • January 2017: On January 9 Hizam and security forces troops officially withdrew from northern Abyan, leaving the territory to AQAP warlords, after intense fights in Lawdar and Shuqrah, giving AQAP complete control and strongholds in Abyan.
  • January 2017: Government forces withdrew from central and southern Abyn, going to Aden, leaving the province to AQAP.
  • February 2017: On February 2 AQAP gained control of Lawdar.
  • February 2017: AQAP withdrew from Lawdar because of a tribal uprising.
  • February 2017: As of the end of February, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) remained in control of about half of Abyan. The southern part of the Abyan Governatorate was under government control.
  • September 2017: On September 12 more than 40 armored vehicles of Hizam forces invaded AQAP controlled parts in Al Wade'a District. The Hizam captured Wadea.
  • September 2017: Hizam forces arrived in AQAP stronghold Mudiyah, in a prelude to clearing Al-Qaeda terrorists. Abu Bakr Hussein Salem later arrived there, after Hizam secured the town.
  • March 2018: Hizam forces unleashed Operation Sweeping Torrent to take control of Al Mahfad from AQAP.

  • 3.1.7.Southern Abyan Offensive (2016)

    Was a military offensive by Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), during the Yemeni Civil War (2014 - present).

  • February 2016: In a major offensive, AQAP took Ahwar.
  • February 2016: Shuqrah was taken by AQAP in one day fighting.

  • 3.1.8.Battle of Sanaa (2017)

    Was a battle during the Yemeni Civil War (2014 - present).

  • November 2017: Saleh officially announced the end of his partnership with the Houthis.
  • December 2017: Ali Abdullah Saleh killed by Houthi forces- Houthis gained total control of Sana'a.

  • 3.1.9.Al Hudaydah offensive

    Was a military offensive launched in December 2017 by pro-government forces against the Houthis in Al Hudaydah Governorate, during the Yemeni Civil War (2014 - present).

  • December 2017: Pro-Hadi government troops entered Al Hudaydah Governorate on the night of 6-7 December, and drove Houthi fighters from the town of Al Khawkhah.
  • December 2017: Pro-government sources claimed that the Houthis were collapsing before the advancing forces, and had lost control of the district of Hays.
  • February 2018: Fall of the town of Hays to government forces.
  • February 2018: The coalition claimed that the sites of Garrahi were captured by the coalition.
  • March 2018: On 21 March, the coalition captured Jabal Ras.
  • May 2018: UAE-backed loyalists captured the Durahemi district.

  • 3.1.10.Operation Al Faisal

    Was a military offensive by the Yemeni government against Al-Qaeda in the Al-Masini valley, during the Yemeni Civil War (2014 - present).

  • February 2018: On February 17, 2018 Hadrami Elite Forces, backed by heavy UAE aerial support, launched Operation Al Faisal, an offensive to retake Al-Masini Valley from AQAP militants. On February 18 Hadrami Elite Forces had entered the valley and begun to slowly liberate all areas in and around the valley.

  • 3.1.11.Operation Black Mountains

    Was a military offensive by the Yemeni government against Al-Qaeda, during the Yemeni Civil War (2014 - present).

  • April 2018: The Yemeni military units backed by the United Arab Emirates reported recapturing the Amed, Dhalia, Hajer, and Yabouth districts from Al-Qaeda.

  • 3.1.12.United Arab Emirates takeover of Socotra

    Was a military expedition by the United Arab Emirates that resulted in the occupation of the island of Socotra, during the Yemeni Civil War (2014 - present).

  • April 2018: UAE Army troops take over Socotra Airport, seaports, and all four islands of the archipelago on 30 April 2018.
  • May 2018: Administrative control of the island of Socotra returned to the Yemeni government.

  • 3.1.13.Battle of Al Hudaydah

    Was a battle during the Yemeni Civil War (2014 - present).

  • June 2018: Beginning on 13 June 2018 and aiming to dislodge Houthi forces from the port, the objective of the assault was to recapture the city of Al Hudaydah.
  • June 2018: Saudi-led coalition claims capture of territory around Hodeida International Airport from Houthi militants on 16 June 2018 and the capture of the airport itself on 20 June 2018.
  • June 2018: Houthis recapture the Hodeida International Airport or at least parts of it.

  • 3.1.14.2020 al-Jawf offensive

    Was a Houthi military offensive in the Al Jawf Governorate, during the Yemeni Civil War (2014 - present).

  • January 2020: Jawf offensive by the Houthis. Territorial change based on available maps.

  • March 2020: Houthi fighters stormed the city of Al Hazm, the capital of Al Jawf province, from different directions on 1 March 2020.

  • 3.1.15.2022 Southern Yemen offensive

    Was a military offensive by the Southern Movement in the Abyan and Shabwah provinces, during the Yemeni Civil War (2014 - present).

  • August 2022: On the same day after heavy clashes Southern forces captured base of 2nd Mountain Infantry Brigade in Azzan.
  • August 2022: Government forces also reportedly withdrew from military sites in Nisab, Radhum, Habban and Mayfa'a districts.
  • August 2022: On 10 August, after three days heavy clashes, Southern forces took control of Shabwah's capital Ataq.
  • August 2022: On 15 August U.A.E. drone struck military position in Shabwah allowing southern forces to advance towards Marib and Hadramawt.
  • August 2022: On 21 August it was reported that government forces decided to hand control over Shuqra and the areas of Qarn al-Kalasi and Al-Arqub to separatist forces.
  • August 2022: On 22 August the Southern Forces took control of Shuqrah-Ahwar road, with the seperatists claiming to control 90% of the Abyan province.
  • August 2022: On 23 August, Southern forces launched an operation called "Arrows of the East" in the Abyan governorate, entering Shuqrah early the next day.
  • August 2022: The Southern forces (STC) captured Khobar al-Maraqisha area and finally Ahwar District.
  • August 2022: On 31 August, Southern forces entered Lawdar in Abyan without a fight.
  • September 2022: On 11 September, Southern forces entered Al-Wadea and Mudiyah districts in Abyan.
  • September 2022: On 13 September Southern forces reportedly arrived on the outskirts of Mahfad district.
  • September 2022: On 14 September Southern forces entered Wadi Omaran east of Mudiyah, clashing with Al-Qaeda.
