Summary
The State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs was a short-lived state that existed for a few months at the end of World War I. It was established on October 29, 1918 after the collapse of Austria-Hungary, bringing together the southern Slav-populated regions that had been part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The new state encompassed the former Austro-Hungarian provinces of Slovenija, Croatia-Slavonia, Dalmatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Vojvodina. It was a unitary, democratic and parliamentary state, with the intention of uniting with the Kingdom of Serbia to form a new Yugoslav state.
On December 1, 1918, it was united with the Kingdom of Serbia to form the new Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes under the Serbian Karadjordjević dynasty. This union was pushed for by the Serbian government, which wanted to maintain its dominant position in the new state.
