Was a short-lived confederal republic in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium) which was established after the Brabant Revolution. It existed from January to December 1790 as part of the unsuccessful revolt against the Habsburg Emperor, Joseph II.
Summary
The United Belgian States was a short-lived republic that existed for a brief period in 1790, emerging from a revolt against the rule of the Austrian Habsburgs in the territories that would eventually become the Kingdom of Belgium.
The rebellion began in 1789, sparked by discontent over the centralizing policies of the Habsburg monarch, Joseph II, and a desire for greater autonomy and religious freedom. A coalition of Belgian nobles, clergy, and commoners, known as the "Statists", rose up and declared the independence of the "Provinces of the Austrian Netherlands" in January 1790.
The new United Belgian States proclaimed itself a federal republic, with a representative assembly and an elected executive committee to govern the country. The states sought to emulate the model of the Dutch Republic, with a decentralized structure allowing for provincial autonomy.
