Is a transcontinental country spanning Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. It is the largest country in the world. Russia emerged as a country in 1264 with the Grand Duchy of Moscow. However, the medieval Kievan Rus' (that emerged in the IX century) is traditionally considered the cultural predecessof Russia (and several other Slavic countries of the region). Russia emerged from the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Russian Federation (formerly the Russian SFSR) assumed the Soviet Union's rights and obligations and is recognized as its continued legal personality.
