    1. Hungarian invasions of Europe


    The Magyars (or Hungarians) successfully conquered the Carpathian Basin (corresponding to the later Kingdom of Hungary) by the end of the ninth century, and launched a number of plundering raids thoughout Europe.

  • January 934: In 933, a substantial Magyar army appeared in Saxony.
  • February 934: An invading Magyar army is defeated by Henry I of Germany at Merseburg (15 March 933).

    The Frankish Kingdom was partitioned and reuinited several times as the Frankish rulers used to divide their territories equally among their heirs. This lead also to a number of wars and revolts.

  • January 966: The Margraviate of Meissen is partitioned from the Marca Geronis.
  • January 966: On Gero's death in 965 the Marca Geronis was divided into five (sometimes counted as six) different marches: the Nordmark, the Ostmark, Meissen, Zeitz, and Merseburg.
  • January 966: The Mark Lausitz, also Margraviate of Lausitz (occasionally Ostmark in the 12th century) was formed in 965 as the eastern border mark in the Roman-German Empire after the former Saxon Ostmark was divided.
