On 3 February 1862, Moldavia and Wallachia formally united to create the Romanian United Principalities, the core of the Romanian nation state. The United Principalities were an Ottoman vassal until 1877, when they declared independence.
Summary
After Cuza's abdication in 1866, the United Principalities adopted a new constitution and elected Prince Carol of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen as the new ruler. Under Carol I, the country continued its path towards modernization and independence.
The 1866 constitution established a constitutional monarchy, with a bicameral parliament and a prime minister as head of government. Carol I worked to strengthen the state's institutions and expand its international recognition. In 1877, Romania declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire and successfully fought alongside Russia in the Russo-Turkish War.
This period saw the gradual consolidation of the Romanian state and its transition from nominal Ottoman suzerainty to de facto independence. The country's international status was bolstered through diplomatic efforts and its participation in the Russo-Turkish War. However, tensions remained with the Ottoman Empire and the Great Powers, who sought to limit Romania's autonomy.
