The British frigate "Orpheus" commanded by Captain Henry Newcome arrived at Mahé on 16 May 1794, during the War of the First Coalition. The Seychelles was surrendered to Britain and became a colony.

1. French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars

May 1814: Under the Treaty of Paris Article VIII France ceded to Britain the islands of "Tobago and Saint Lucia, and of the Isle of France and its dependencies, especially Rodrigues and Les Seychelles.
