Was one of the many independent counties that emerged in Catalonia during the period of instability after the death of West Frankish King Louis the Stammerer.
Establishment
January 880: After the death of Louis the Stammerer (879), Aquitaine and West Francia in general experienced a period of instability during which the outlying regions, such as Catalonia, became de facto independent of central royal authority.

The Frankish Kingdom was partitioned and reuinited several times as the Frankish rulers used to divide their territories equally among their heirs. This lead also to a number of wars and revolts.
1.1.Partition of West Francia
After the death of West Frankish Emperor Louis the Stammerer In March 880 at Amiens, the Kingdom was divided among his two sons.
The Magyars (or Hungarians) successfully conquered the Carpathian Basin (corresponding to the later Kingdom of Hungary) by the end of the ninth century, and launched a number of plundering raids thoughout Europe.

January 949: Sunifred II of Urgell died without descendants and the county went to his nephew Borrell II, Count of Barcelona, Girona and Osona.
January 989: In 988, Borrell II, Count of Urgell, gave the Andorran valleys to the Diocese of Urgell in exchange for land in Cerdanya. Since then, the Bishop of Urgell, based in Seu d'Urgell, has been Co-prince of Andorra.
January 1025: Barcelona conquers of Ager.
January 1039: Barcelona conquers of Vallfogona.
January 1057: Barcelona conquers of Tarrega.
January 1059: In 1058, when Count Raymond accepted the pay of Raymond Berengar I of Barcelona to be his ally in the fight against the Moors, the fate of Cerdanya to be in the control of Barcelona was sealed. In the next centuries, Cerdanya was part of the Principality of Catalonia.
January 1071: Barcelona conquers of Agramunt.

January 1079: Ponce I was the first count of Ampurias to render vassalage to the counts of Barcelona in 1078.

January 1114: In 1113, the Countess of Provence, Dolce I, granted the title and government of the county of Provence to her husband, Count Raimondo Berengario III of Barcelona, of the house of Barcelona.

January 1126: The marquisate of Provence was formed in 1125 from a division of the county of Provence.

January 1158: Alcaniz was conquered by count Ramon Berenguer IV of Barcelona in 1157.
January 1159: Alcaniz conquered by Kingdom of Aragon.
Disestablishment
January 1163: Alfonso II of Aragon became also count of Barcelona after the death of his father, Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona.
